The New Prayer Shawl (2015) Live Performance Still

The New Prayer Shawl is a multidisciplinary work exploring ideas of religion, ritual, cultural identity, memory, and gender within Jewish tradition. Through scupture, wearable works, live performance and video installation, Zinman examine how traditions, religious practices, ritual objects, and personal memory can play a vital role in the development of our personal identities, values, and sense of self.

The works focus on two well known rituals practiced within the Jewish Tradition; that of lighting candles before Shabbat, and that of wearing a Tallis (Jewish Prayer Shawl / garment) in synagogue. The New Prayer Shawl attempts to explore the meanings behind these practices, and challenge the norms that they represent through visibility and embodiment via performance, textile, wearable works, and video installation.
